[edit] Beginnings

Samuel was born 21 Oct 1873 in South Carolina, apparently the child of Jacob Marion Hughes and Rosalie Maynard[1]. Establishing Samuel's birthplace is somewhat problematic as he is listed consistently in the census enumerations with a birthplace of North Carolina. The Samuel B. Hughes enumerated in Savannah, Chatham, Georgia (as outline below) is clearly the correct Samuel, and his wife, Alice B. Hughes, is clearly the informant for his death certificate. His WWI Draft Registration card does not ask for, and therefore does not answer to, his birthplace[2].
